Doting doggies
New York's hardworking therapy canines
give a whole new meaning to pet care

BY JULIAN KESNER

Putting a smile on someone's face is all it takes to be top dog.

Just ask the city's hospital patients who are lucky enough to know the pet therapy dogs featured here, six of dozens of such volunteer pooches from around the region.

Scores of studies have proven that a pet's presence helps alleviate depression, high blood pressure, dementia and other ailments - and may even speed the healing process. That makes these dogs a hit among pediatric and elderly patients, many of whom are long-term hospital residents and susceptible to loneliness.

"Pet therapy is a great distraction for children in an environment that can often be very intimidating," says Dr. Nelly Boggio, pediatric hospitalist program director at St. Luke's Hospital.

"I really enjoy Linus," says 80-year-old James Heekan of Williamstown, Mass., and a New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell patient of one of their therapy dogs. "It's nice to see a dog that brightens your day here."

Below, meet one of the caring canines.

Therapy Dog: Addie
Breed: English Yellow Labrador
Age: 19 months
Hospital/Program: St. Luke's Hospital Pediatric Unit
Owner: Judith Lynn, upper West Side
Fun facts on Addie: English Labrador retrievers are traditionally smaller and a bit stockier than American Labradors - and more mellow, making for an ideal therapy pet. Lynn bought Addie on a farm in New Hampshire, and her sweet pooch enjoys swimming and fetching balls in her spare time. Her trademark move: When fetching a ball, Addie slowly walks backward until it's thrown.

1) Subject: Integrity's StarBeck will be on TV
Brenda and Ken,

I just wanted you both to know that
Becky will be on Chronicle  on 10/12/06. Channel 12 around here. Tiffany Eddy came to the All Dogs Gym to film Canine Freestyle, and get a good look at Becky.  Check it out and see Becky’s TV debut.  She is just a love and so busy lately.  She has a good life and we have a great dog.  I tell people all the time about you two and how good your dogs are.  Just wanted you to know that 10/12/06 will show Integrity’s StarBeck dancing away and having a blast.  a hour and a half of filming, and Tiffany telling me that Becke and I looked real good on the finished piece, I am very excited to see what air.  Thanks again for such a fun dog.

Beside her freestyle play, she is very busy with pet therapy and just was registered as  R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dog) dog, so she can now go into schools and library for reading with dog programs. I am very excited.

Take Care,
Lynn Marie Millette
